I kind of like the idea of going back and forth between doing both. Some movies work with the villain as the focus and some work better with the hero. Depends on what the story calls for, really.

Went and seen it a night before I had originally planned, and was not disappointed! This was a great movie, and I am absolutely baffled by the 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The only thing that I really disliked about this movie was that it took longer to take off than the first, but once it kicked in, it was my favorite Marvel movie I've ever seen. I've never gave a movie a ten, but this one was close. The best thing of all was the humor, and every performance was spot on. I was also surprised at how deep this movie could be at times and just how many life lessons were inter woven into it

81% isn't surprising though. It's working against the expectations for the first movie, which are a near impossible standard to reach. Upon first viewing, I'd actually put Vol.2 in the middle of Marvel's offerings overall. Marvel's movie's are getting really ambitious though, they're really starting to get weird and different. It's hard to even compare them to each other because certain aspects are done better in movies that are overall considered to be lesser films. Take Age of Ultron, the team dynamics in that are richer than the first Avengers, the action better IMO, and yet the movie isn't nearly as snappy as the first. With Guardians Vol.2, I had stronger emotional moments in that film than any other Marvel film, and yet, there are also more jokes that fail to land in this film than any other Marvel film I can think of. The first Guardians has a 100% joke landing rate for me. Everything that was supposed to be funny, I thought was funny, so that's not something that can be beat in my book. In the end, I still loved this movie and I want to see it a 3rd time. The music was a slow burn for me, but I've been playing the sound track during class time as background music. The kids really seem to be enjoying it.

GOTG Vol.2 passes $800 million screenrant.com/guardians-galaxy-2-box-office-800-million/I don't know that this will reach $1 billion. If Wonder Woman was coming out in 3 weeks, then I'd say it had a good chance. Pirates had a good memorial day weekend due to the international box office, but I don't see that movie picking up steam. Baywatch didn't pan out unfortunately. So, with those 2 potential heavy hitters missing the mark, I think Guardians has been able to capitalize on that and would continue to capitalize if it weren't for Wonder Woman. Since WW is coming out in a day or so, and it's coming in on a lot of hype and very positive reviews, I'm leaning toward the film not hitting a billion. Actually, I'm thinking it may stay in the lower 800 million range (below $850), and not reach $900 million. Still a smash hit of course. With the international box office being what it is tho, you never know. It could continue to climb significantly higher for the next 3-4 weeks. If it does hit $1 billion, I'll be a little surprised. That's somewhat odd, because prior to the movie coming out, the trailers were making it look like it could be Marvel's new, non-crossover box office champion. On a different note, I might have mentioned this in another thread here, but I did end up seeing the movie a 3rd time and I loved it. Each time I saw the film I enjoyed it more. It's a movie that isn't so much made for fans of the MCU as it is for fans of the first film. There's a lot of themes that make a return and are expanded on in subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) ways.

Baywatch a heavy hitter? LOL I know it's funny to think about, but it does have Dwayne Johnson in it, and it looked like it might have that 21 Jump Street Quality to it. Those Jump Street films did very well, with the first doing over $200 million on a $55 million budget, and the 2nd doing over $300 million on an $84 million dollar budget.
