It's always significant when someone passes, but this year... I've never been one to count down to the next year as a symbolic way to close the door on current bad things. Why wait until next year? Let's get on the "train" to better times right now, you know? But this... this is another thing on top of the innumerable other things and it's terrible. Rest in Power Mr. Boseman.

I want to amend, or maybe just rephrase one thing from my post above. Chadwick Boseman's passing is not just "another thing". I guess what I meant to say was, there has been so much heart break this year. Just about any event is going to be harder to deal with because of the weight of the other events. That said, regardless of the context of this year, his passing is a tremendous loss and I join the rest of the world in mourning the passing of this young man who was just as amazing off camera as he was on film.

Ryan Coogler's Tribute www.comicbookmovie.com/black_panther/black-panther-director-ryan-coogler-pens-heartfelt-tribute-to-chadwick-boseman-a177983#gs.eu3i4lThis dude is running on raw emotion right here. The whole message is beautifully written. When someone passes whom we knew, we attend a wake. Since we didn't know Mr. Boseman personally, some of us will find open mic tributes and pour over old social media sharings from the man. If you, like me, have been doing that the last 48 hours, I think you'll find Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's words especially comforting in a cathartic way. Lopli, I'm so glad you and your mother made it thru COVID. Sending my continued thoughts and prayers for your father's recovery old friend.

This has to be the most emotionally effective teaser trailer Marvel Studios has ever put out. Wrecked me Saturday night, all of Sunday, Monday, and I'm just now starting to get back to normal. It just struck a chord. More than any of their titles outside of the Infinity War / Endgame Combo and No Way Home, I want this to be a great movie.
There was a lot of talk about a trouble production, some actors like Martin Freeman not even understanding what the movie was going to be about. Talk like that is always going to be a point of concern, but Marvel Studios has also turned out a number of hits with these kinds of reports too. Most recently, I read reports of Tom Holland wanting script revisions the day of for No Way Home to capture the best story for his Peter Parker, and it goes all the way back to the first Iron Man where they threw out the script. Joss Whedon did it to both negative and positive effects in his Avengers movies, and Taika Waititi too to an extent.
So, I'm not worried, just really really hopeful.

The first reactions from the Premiere have been overwhelmingly positive. This isn't a rarity with Marvel Studios, and as of late, their less consistent track record hasn't really shown in the early reactions. Point is, you can't trust early reactions.
That said, I'm seeing a number of people who aren't necessarily MCU homers like me who have been willing to criticize the recent slate of movies over things that could've been better, who have actually responded very positively to Wakanda Forever. Like, very, very positively. I don't expect to be able to stay composed watching this one, but still, I can't wait. Got my tickets for Thursday night 11-10.
In the Quantumania thread, I posted about that movie having promise in taking us to a new universe and giving us that other worldly feel. I've read and listened to recent spoiler free reactions that talk about how real Wakanda feels. It's this special place that people have taken to in a very powerful way, and apparently, this movie is every bit as much of a transport to this magical place as the first one and more. I am so excited to return to Wakanda. Going to be something.

There's something about the Black Panther films that's just a step above the rest of what the MCU puts out, in terms of their solo fare. Whether it's the costumes, the music, or even the marketing. Take that first teaser trailer from movie one, and follow that up with their theatrical trailer. Now we have Wakanda Forever and this unprecedented situation in terms of MCU actors, and the teaser trailer they dropped in July. Follow that up with a decent official trailer, but more importantly, these featurettes they've been putting out. It's raw stuff. I'm not ready, but I'll be going on Thursday and we'll see how many times I can handle seeing it after that.

As I'm seeing more reviews come out, based on what I'm reading, I can see this movie scoring in the 70 percentage range for Marvel. I hope it resonates with people and maybe it'll be able to crack that coveted 90% and above range. I'm starting to have my doubts though. Last I checked, Rotten Tomatoes site was acting weird, the main page would say one thing but you'd click on the movie and it'd say something else in terms of the percentage.

Back a day later and I'm happy to report that the official consensus hasn't dropped too much. With 166 reviews, most of the critics have found the movie agreeable so far. The thing that makes me a little nervous is that some of the negative reviews lean really hard against the movie and the MCU as a whole. A movie that can be that polarizing has potential to be so amongst a larger sample size. It used to be the case that 166 reviews come out, and your percentage is pretty much set because the total reviews would top out around 200. If you look at movies as of late though, blockbusters like "The Batman" and "Top Gun: Maverick" have WELL over 400 reviews each. So at that rate, and with a movie like this, half the reviews haven't even come out yet and it's really hard to see where the chips will end up falling. The percentage right now is trending downward though.
Stay tuned.

Here we are, Friday morning, and the scores have been hovering in the 87-84% range with a downward trajectory. However, it's holding better than I thought it would, and after seeing it myself, I think it will definitely resonate with people. How many times will people want to see this in theaters is anyone's guess. It's not overly sad. To be honest, I expected to have a very tough time in the theater and I was pleasantly surprised. To be sure, there are some raw, serious moments. Moments where the theater was silent and the music stopped and it was just real. Is that something people will be able to go back to again and again like they did for the original? It's tough to tell. I will say that the world of Talocan really got my imagination going. Seeing Tenoch Huerta up there on the big screen, powerful as he is, with badass lines to deliver and great action (IMO) to be a part of, that's definitely something that's going to have me going back at least one more time.
As of this writing, the critics score is 85% with 262 reviews and an audience rating of 94% at over 1000% verified ratings. Here's hoping it sneaks back up a bit. I would be happy for an 85% though, no doubt, especially with a movie that seems to be generating the type of both extremely positive and super cynical reviews this one has.
On another note, I think the box office for the 3 day weekend will reach the 200 millions. That portrayal of Namor, I can see people really responding to it.
