Got it today... It's pretty fun actually. I wouldn't say it's excellent, but it has some very good elements in it.

I say go for it... And I also say wait till he gets half way through before asking him. Now the main problems are that it's good but not great at the beginning, and that the controls are original (yet amazing), so, they take quite a long time to get used to.

Alright... I've beaten the game. Now I'll just have to clear it at 100%. I'd give it a fair 8.5/10.

Okay... After you beat the story, there's a small bonus that I just did... And it was really cool. But the very very end felt sort of unnecessary. Was still cool. Rank remains 8.5/10 for me.

I got it and played about a third of the way through the game. Then school started, and that got hectic, so it'll be a while before I pick it up again. I was enjoying myself thoroughly while I played it though.

I was enjoying myself thoroughly while I played it though. It gets much better once you're done with Sector 1, in my opinion. I hope you'll like it as much as I did.

I think I will. I noticed the fun factor increasing the more I played, so it's nice to know that I didn't hit a plateau.

so i read this ign article about how other m ruined samus and i have to agree.
now i watched vids about teh metroid prime story so i know the story. but i have never played. i don't think i have to be a player to appreciate how different and unique samus is as a character.
how you go through this cool game with a cool robo hero and then boom its a chick. it blurred the lines between gender roles. now a girl could be badass as a dude.
but then other m comes around and makes samus a cliched woman. she is emotional and insecure and obedient. she's a character who suddenly can't handle her job. and that is just bullshit.
the article mentioned how obedient samus became. i dont' exactly remember, but it was a situation where she was in some lava pit and her suit was breaking and she refused to save herself not because she was told to not use the suit function to save her, but because she wasn't told anything. and since there was no order she just thought for some reason they would rather have her dead.
this article from a long time metroid player. and from an outside perspective i agree. i've always appreciated metroid games.
on a game level it is good from what everyone says so you could make the point that the story is irrelevant to its quality, but still i think they messed up what made metroid different.

Dialogue (mostly monologue anyways) and voice acting were terrible... But I didn't care. The game had one of the best stories in a subplot of its... That they completely gave up at the end... That fucking pissed me off and sort of ruined the whole story. But yeah, the character just plain sucked.

so the plot was good, but ruined by bad dialogue and a messed up ending.
but like you said its the gameplay that counts.
