Sherlock Holmes (BBC, 2010): 9/10 I’ll keep this kind of brief, but I do think it warrants a lot more praise than what I’ll go on to describe. Just saw the first one, and it is now my favorite rendition of the character (as good as 2009’s Holmes was). A lot of Sherlock movies have been made over the years, and I am no connoisseur of the character. Just don’t know a lot about him. This version is almost unarguably great though. Benedict Cumberpatch is fantastic as Holmes. Quick witted, impossible to deal with, and completely believable as a genius. Martin Freeman is equally as good as Watson. Their chemistry together is perfect, and definitely warrants several return visits. The story itself was fun, and definitely leaves you wanting more when it’s over. My only complaint is how the villain conflict is resolved. Is Holmes really going to go back and play the game, after he's caught the villain? Is he really going to fall into the cliche where he's a bored genius, and must do something extreme to feel alive? There’s nothing wrong with it per se, but I’ve seen it before again and again, and while it’s executed very well here, the device felt a tad bit cheaper than the rest of the story in terms of writing. Just not as fresh. That’s a personal qualm though . I’m probably the last person on these boards to have seen this, but better late than never. Can’t wait to see Cumberpatch in Star Trek now that I have a better idea of what he can bring to the table.
