I loved it except they didn't make Black Mask bad-ass enough. I loved that scene when he has the big fight with the Red Hood and kills him in front of Batman who arrives at the end. But it wasn't Jason , it was a hitman hired by Jason. That whole scene was left out and the interaction with him and the Joker never happened (but the Amazo fight was from the comics). They don't even show how the Joker captures him and threatens to burn him, his men, and the civilians. It just seemed like more unrealistic Joker-pandering. They are damaging their own credibility straying from the comics just to cow-tow to the Joker fans. Joker is dangerous enough without that element made up for the animated film.

I said that the Black Mask vs Red Hood fight scene was an awesome part of the story they left out. Then to add insult to the omission, they invent the Joker/Black Mask stuff. I would have preferred they stayed closer to the comic book source. It wouldn't make Joker any weaker. I'll have to reread this story now that the movie is fresh on my mind.

i never read the story so i can't compare. but i feel like joker's placement at the end made more sense. it brings the story full circle.

That part was in the comics. Where Red Hood forces Batman to choose and all that.

Even though some parts were left out, the movie is still awesome.

This for me, is a must have animated movie. I'll have to get it on blu ray eventually. I've decided to stop buying dvd's and just save my money for a blu ray player, with dvd playing capability.

I just saw "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" last night. I have to say, it's up there with the best of the Batman flicks. These animated films are so impressive, I'm blown away. Batman fanatics are really lucky to have people like Bruce Tim and all those talented voice actors doing these movies for all these years. I don't know which I'm more impressed with at this point. I feel like Stan Lee. One day, this character is my favorite, the next another one is, depending on what I've been watching lately. That wouldn't be the case if these movies weren't consistent, but that's the thing. They are, and it's a tradition of quality.
P.S. I was youtubing a bunch of old Siskel and Ebert reviews for fun. I saw their reviews on movies like Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Tim Burton's Batman, etc. I mention this because it turns out that they did a review on "Mask of the Phantasm" 4 or 5 years after it came out, and they absolutely loved it.
