So last night my wife and I purchased the digital HD version of Dr.Strange with special bonus content. We just didn't want to wait until February 27th. We ended up going through all of the special features after watching the movie, and let me tell you, these ones were quite good. I sort of grew tired of the extras provided on blu rays because after 10+ years of obsessing over them, things got repetitive. However, once every blue moon a movie comes out that's different enough in some way that the extra features shed light on something new. That's what this was. My brother-in-law watched the movie with us. He does 3D modeling, which is related to animation, so it's always nice to get his take on things. We were all impressed at how much of the special effects for the movie were done in camera, versus how much was actually green screen. The level of detail put into this movie seems to far exceed anything they've ever done before at Marvel be it props, action choreography, Dr.Strange's magic hand/finger choreography, the music, special effects, and arguably even costume design. I do think the movie deserves the Oscar for best VFX this year, for sure. What I think I enjoyed the most, however, is the extended look at Marvel's upcoming phase 3 line up. Marvel has really skimped in terms of the sneak peaks they give on their blu rays. They promote the sneak peak in selling their merchandise, and then you get the merchandise to find out the extra material was completely spoiled in the promos. With this, some of it was teased, and yet they spent a whole 15 minute segment just enhancing it. Like, they spent actual money on producing the segment. The bonus features are definitely worth looking at this time around, and they do a great job of getting you pumped for Avengers Infinity War (as though that's much of a problem for us around these parts).
Fun Fact: Dr.Strange's budget was only $165 million. That's a lot when you compare it to Deadpool's $60 million, but looking at how immaculate, gigantic, and numerous their sets were, who was in their cast, and everything else they did to create the movie, it's a wonder they didn't spend a lot more.
