"Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker. GOTHAM is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), GOTHAM follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time."

I'm excited for this yet at the same time I have a weird feeling it will fail. Maybe it's because the actor playing Gordon, Ben McKenzie, I just associate as the guy from the O.C lol.

Eh, I'm not really sure about this. It seems to be just like this thing with horror movies being made into TV shows lately; Bates Motel, Rosemary's Baby, Hannibal, it's all this, "origins", business so they can very easily just vaguely slap icons onto hackneyed drama.

I agree on Bates Motel, but Hannibal deserves a chance because without question it is the best acted, written, and visually directed television show on network tv if not one of the best on any form. The show is no prequel but a true re imagining and the best one to date.

Brilliant second season yet they're still considering if they want to renew it or not.

I continued a conversation that started in The Batman thread, and now I'm bringing it here. In that thread we were discussing how Gotham slowly lost its character as the Nolan series progressed, and how I hoped that the new series would really take advantage of using the city itself as a character of sorts. Thinking back to movies like Watchmen and Batman Begins, one of the reasons why I loved them so much is because they were totally immersive experiences. Watchmen in particular was very committed to creating a world that is very true (too true for many) to the source. Going in with this new series, it'll definitely do a lot to enrich the character, to add another dimension to the "why" behind him. Begins did a good job in establishing a world that would produce an individual like Bruce Wayne, but there's definitely room for more exploration on that front. This show will hopefully knock it out of the park in that respect. Early reviews are very positive.

So, I attended DC's night of entertainment in Hall H on Saturday night. I waited in line from 5:30pm Friday, and stayed in the Hall until 11pm Saturday night. Suffice it to say I'm exhausted. I'll talk about the show more later, but I will say this. It exceeded my expectations of what I thought it would do based on its trailers. The potential of a show like this is big, of course, but there was always the question of how Fox was going to handle it. Well, I think they did great. Ben MacKenzie kills it, and that dude from Grounded for Life actually does a really good job too. I've heard some still aren't happy with his casting, but he totally changed my mind. I was a little worried about having a young Bruce Wayne in there, especially because child actors sometimes aren't up to par with the rest of the cast. That being said, those worries have turned to excitement because the kid is a natural and he actually strengthens the show. He's definitely a child who's not right inside emotionally, which in the pilot is already being shown to take some seriously twisted effects on his overall psychology. This looks like it'll be Gordan's show though, for sure. Just saying there's some really interesting stuff going on with kid Bruce that's never been approached on television. Also, before I go, Penguin kicked ass, and the city looks pretty damn good. It's more like Gotham city than I have ever seen in a live action production.

Anyone catch the latest episode of Gotham? Penguin's Umbrella, it was called. I'll admit that the show has been mucking around a little since the pilot, but this last one made up for the others IMO. If the show can continue to build off of last week's explosive episode, then I see it growing its fan base.

The first episodes weren't great but there has been a dramatic improvement over the last couple of episodes. The only reason I kept watching during the weaker episodes was because of Oswald Cobblepot's story arc. I don't think the show would be successful without Cobblepot.
Love Bullock and Gordon. Fish Mooney is probably a little too cartoony for the 'Gotham' universe but the character fulfills its purpose. I'm really interested to see what they do with Bruce and Selina in future episodes.

Well, interesting that immediately after you said that, the Bruce and Selina dynamic was born. It's adorable, and not too terrible a representation of the adolescent experience*. It's also fun to see Alfred be such a hardened, tough dude. The show runners said that they wanted to show audiences their take on the type of person Alfred is; the type of guy who would allow Bruce to turn into who he eventually becomes. The show has definitely found its footing.

I'm about an episode behind, tonight having seen "Welcome Back Jim Gordon". Personally, I think it was great. I've heard a few say that the season just keeps getting worse as we progress further, but I feel the opposite. Still really love the guy who plays Zsasz. That guy is great playing a nut. He seems always ready to explode.

Just watched the season 1 finale. I actually enjoyed it, but I don't think this show will last through season 2 if it doesn't start going somewhere quick. There's a gang war plot line that finally got a little umph behind it, so maybe that'll get more people onto it. I dunno though. There are interesting characters like Oswald, Nigma, Gordon and Bullock, Maroni, Falcone, etc. It's just that when you put the parts together, they don't add up to anything greater. In fact, the sum of all those parts is less than their combined total because some parts detract from others. I kind of wish you could just take Nigma and make him a regular on Bones. Put Maroni in an HBO crime show or some shit. Hell, put him in Daredevil. If he was retooled he'd fit in just fine. This show needs a direction that people will care about more than just waiting for little Batman to grow up, and I'm not sure there'll ever be one.

EDIT 1: There will be spoilers that follow.
Okay, so I was wrong about the last episode being the season finale. I should have known, considering that it was sort of anti-climactic. Now that I'm watching the real thing, 27 minutes in and it's so much ass. The contrived situation that puts Barbara and Morena Bacarin's character on screen together. The dialogue between Fish, Maroni, and kid cat woman. The action looks ridiculous and stupid. Shit, it was so unbelievably, unintentionally campy. I'll update this post when the episode is over.
EDIT 2: Nothing really to add. This was all ridiculous. I like kid Bruce for now.

I actually waited to watch anything from season 2 until now. I sort of went on a 5 episode binge. This season is so much better right out the gate for a couple reasons. The main one being that it's focused now. We're not focusing on these villain of the week arcs. The first season demonstrated some long form story telling, but as a viewer you had to wade through a bunch of crap until the show got to the point, and even then there was crap sprinkled in here and there. Thus far, that hasn't been the case. My two favorite characters continue to be Edward Nigma and Victor Zsasz. I hope Zsasz isn't killed off unceremoniously. He has been such a badass. Barbara's character has been completely mutilated, I can't stand what they've done with her. Morena Baccarin's character Dr. Leigh Thompson is incredibly likable though. I have this suspicion that they're going to either kill her off, or have her break up with Gordon over all the crazy that's in his life. Either one would be a shame.
What else is there? Oh, I still like kid Bruce's adventures with Alfred. The young actor they have playing Bruce is pretty good, and Alfred is one of the best characters on the show. Definitely interested in seeing Bruce evolve through his training. I'm surprised at how patient they're being with developing that. They're not jumping too fast, but you get to see growth often enough to keep it interesting. Robin Lord Taylor is still doing okay as Penguin. He's solid for the most part, except when he's not. The good in his performance far outweigh's the bad in my book.

So, this entire post is going to be filled with spoilers. Mid season finale was on tonight. If tonight's wasn't the midseason finale, then it's probably next week. I'm usually a week off on those sorts of things. Bravo Gotham. There's still some bull shit you have to wade through. Gordon is totally screwing up his relationship with Morena Baccarin. Their chemistry is great, and you want their relationship to be a highlight of the show because of it. The problem is that she's perfect and you hate seeing his conviction and the job put their relationship through the ringer. It's actually my least favorite part of the entire series, because they're so good together. Hell, in real life they started a relationship and had a baby. The chemistry is real. On the other side of things, Bruce Wayne's connection to everything gets more compelling every episode, Alfred continues to be one of the best characters, and Selina is endearing herself to me again. Penguin and Edward Nigma just started an interesting friendship, and Michael Chiklis's character adds some much needed balance to the good guys side in the show. Check it out, the show is great now.
