No better way to quickly communicate that it's the 90's than opening with a Blockbuster Video.

What did you think of the Stan Lee tribute? The cameo was your average, run of the mill Stan Lee cameo, but the tribute was simple and very effective.
Of the feminism that Brie subscribes to and is getting negative recognition for, I think most of what she said shouldn't have been controversial in the first place. She made a comment about the majority of the journalists being present at set visits were white males. However, she continued by stating that there weren't enough seats at the table for all journalists, and she wanted to do what she could to give more people access to the behind the scenes stuff. She said no seats were being taken away, but rather more seats were being added to this metaphorical table, as it were. The result of this is that their production had 2 big set visits instead of just the one as has been the industry standard, and due to that fact, the movie received more exposure. It was a good thing. I also know of one other thing that was said by Larson, and while that could have been worded better on her end, it didn't even receive the recognition that her first statement did which I find odd.
I'm glad that you watched the movie and enjoyed it on its own merits. To be honest, it sounds like you enjoyed it more than I did. I really liked it, but I felt that it was a little bland at times. It was set in the 90s, but it didn't really pull it off as well as Captain America pulled off being set in the 40s, or X-Men First Class pulled off being set in the 60s, or even Logan pulled off being set in the future. The relationships saved the movie for me, as well as Larson's strong performance with Sam Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn and Lashana Lynch. While I liked the songs in the movie, those needle drop moments weren't executed as smoothly as they were in Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy vol.1 and 2, or Thor Ragnarok for example. As a whole, I was hoping for more. That said, I wasn't too impressed with the first Ant Man and I loved the second one which was directed by Peyton Reed. Maybe this directing duo has something else up their sleeve for the next one. As it stands, I still enjoyed it and feel that this is coming off more critical than I mean for it to.
