This show chronicles the every day adventures of mother and daughter Lorelei and Lorelei (who goes by 'Rory') Gilmore in their home town of Stars Hollow. Lorelai is funny, charming and beautiful, resilient and forgiving, but also a daughter of impulse. We meet her as an adult with her teenage daughter, but soon discover that she (Lorelai, the mother) ran away from home, pregnant at 17 years of age, to escape the suffocating life of a debutante. Lorelai was always fiercely independent, but she proved herself to be more than a spoiled rich girl the moment she left home. Her daughter Rory is the image of perfection, and the two of them are best friends. Stars Hollow, population unknown but probably around 3000 people, loves them, and they love Stars Hollow. The town is filled with colorful characters who round out the show and who are given so much screen time they sort of co-headline the show as well.
My wife just introduced me to this show a couple weeks ago, and we've had mini marathons almost every day we can afford the time. We're currently on episode 4 or 5 of season 3, which doesn't sound that impressive. However, each season has like, 21 or 22 episodes, and each episode is 45 minutes without commercials, so it has been a fun time all around. What can I say about this show that hasn't already been said by others' who love it? It's wholesome, it's funny, it's raw and playful in execution, dare I say it, experimental even. I think this is the show where Melissa McCarthy got her big break, and yet, her persona in movies is NOTHING like the character she plays in the show. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are incredibly charming and lovable leads, but flawed and conflicted as well. They drive you crazy, you get angry at them and impatient with them at times, but you can't help but fall in love with them over and over again. The same goes for the show's supporting characters as well. I am so happy that Netflix continued the series, and eagerly await the next mini marathon of the show tonight.
