Millions of gamers are unable to play online as the Playstation Network remains unavailable. Users are seeing error messages stating the network is "undergoing maintenance" or is "suspended". In a blog post, maker Sony said it turned off the network on Wednesday after it detected an "external intrusion" and that it was doing all it could to resolve it the problem. In recent weeks, Playstation has been targeted by hackers' group Anonymous. The group appeared to deny being responsible for the attack, releasing a message stating "for once we didn't do it". The network has more than 70 million users worldwide and is available in 60 countries. Sony were unable to clarify how many players had been affected. However it has been confirmed that gamers in England, America, Australia and many more countries have been affected. The bastardos picked a great time to hack into PSN... I just got Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and now I can't download the exclusive missions or play multiplayer!

That's good. It's my source of renting movies to watch and I've got 3 I've wanted to get. I've also really been wanting to play Medal of Honor online. It sucks bawlz but there's something about it that keeps me in... Brotherhood is worth the wait though, I have that and the multiplayer is fun when people play it right and actually original.

This fiasco has completely changed my view of Sony. This is unacceptable. I hope that the people in charge of PSN’s security are held responsible. It's a colossal failure, we’re talking millions of people here who had their data compromised. Thank god I've never used a credit card on PSN. -------------------------- PSN back online within the week: au.gamespot.com/news/6310386.html?tag=latestheadlines%3Btitle%3B1

First lawsuit: www.psu.com/PSN-Crisis--Sony-sued-over-data-breach--a011470-p0.phpKristopher Johns of Birmingham, Alabama today sued the electronics giant for failing to take "reasonable care to protect, encrypt, and secure the private and sensitive data of its users." In the lawsuit, Johns, 36, demands free credit monitoring and monetary compensation. He seeks to elevate the suit to class action status. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal recently voiced similar concerns. "This action arises from SONY’s failure to maintain adequate computer data security of consumer personal data and financial data, including, but not limited to credit card data and the reasonably foreseeable exploitation of such inadequate security at defendant SONY by computer “hackers,” causing the compromise of the privacy of private information of approximately seventy-seven (77) Million consumer credit card account holders," reads the lawsuit. "Plaintiff is informed and believes that this breach of security was caused by SONY’s negligence in data security, including its failure to maintain a proper firewall and computer security system, failure to properly encrypt data, its unauthorized storage and retention of data, its violation of Payment Card Industry Data Standard(s) and rules and regulations it was bound to obey for the benefit of consumers concerning the storage of consumers’ private identifying transaction and credit card information, and its violation of California laws requiring the implementation and maintenance of security for customer information."

Just got an e-mail that said this:
"Add PlayStation_Network@playstation-email.com to your address book =================================== PlayStation(R)Network ===================================
Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password, login, password security answers, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data may have been obtained, including purchase history and billing address (city, state/province, zip or postal code). If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.
We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment"
