Only days after DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns let slip that 100 Bullets is “going to be a great TV show,” Deadline reports that David S. Goyer is attached to write and executive produce an adaptation of the Vertigo crime series for Showtime. Warner Bros. Television is producing.
Created by Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso, the award-winning comic began as a fascinating but brutal study of human nature, with the mysterious Agent Graves approaching ordinary people with an attache case containing a gun, 100 untraceable bullets and evidence of who had wronged them. But as 100 Bullets unfolded, it became a sprawling, even byzantine, crime saga involving a clandestine organization known as The Trust, a centuries-old conspiracy, and Graves’ scheme to bring the group down. The series, which ran for 100 issues, from August 1999 to April 2009, has earned multiple Eisner and Harvey awards.
There’s long been rumors of 100 Bullets being adapted as a television series — its length, complexity and serial nature would make a film virtually impossible — with fans and industry watchers searching for clues in comments made by Azzarello and others. Although HBO, the former home of The Sopranos, seemed like the natural fit, Showtime has as already shown interest in comic-book properties with its upcoming adaptation of Chew.
Goyer is no stranger to comic books, either. The former JSA writer has penned numerous comic-book adaptations, from Blade and Batman Begins to The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel. He was also a producer of the short-lived TV shows Threshold and Blade: The Series.
