This season has convinced me that Dexter should die either by suicide or by Debra’s hand. He’s broken his code numerous times and is now just a plain serial killer.
The show has deliberately broken its bond with it's audience because now we aren’t positioned to sympathise with either Dexter or Deb, now they are both killers. Dexter’s kills were somewhat justifiable originally because the people he was killing were evil but now he’s killing anyone because he wants to (because it benefits him in some way e.g Hannah’s dad) not because he needs to. Meanwhile Debra has gone against her morals because she loves her brother and also possibly the fact that she would have went down with Dexter regardless because she helped burn the church. I’m still not convinced that Hannah poisoned Debra either.
Other random thoughts: I hope Hannah returns for the final season.
Hopefully this episode’s events take the Dexter-Debra romance off the table.
I actually thought Hannah’s bloody kiss was going to poison Dexter in some way but apparently not.
It will be interesting to see what impact LaGuerta's disappearance will have on the show, particularly if Matthews puts two and two together now that it appears he will return permanently. Those warrants are probably still at LaGuerta's house as well.
I miss Doakes as well...

Agreed about everything you said in the spoiler brackets. I don't want Hannah to kill him though. If Dexter gets murdered, it has to be by a worthy hand. She just didn't do it for me, but if the character does come back, she will probably be developed further as a more ruthless, aggressive killer. I wouldn't mind if Debra killed him though, maybe even Angel. At the end of the day, I want to see him get redemption. Even if he does die immediately afterward.

Bethany Joy Lenz (One Tree Hill) will be recurring on the upcoming new season: www.tvguide.com/News/Bethany-Joy-Lenz-Dexter-1063078.aspxShe plays Cassie "an attractive former finance executive looking for a quieter life,". She is slated to debut in the season's fourth episode and will wind up moving in next door to Dexter.

I'll be starting the final season in less than 24 hours. As it stands, I do not like the Dexter character as I once did. I'm still invested in what happens to him, but given the decisions the character has made and the repercussions it has had on his loved ones, I no longer root for his long term success. He needs to stop or be stopped, one way or another.

I finally got around to seeing the final season of Dexter. The season itself was alright, but the final episode was, to sum it up in one word: disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I have to reiterate that the ride was okay. There were plenty of laughs and surprises, characters who were sent off in a way you’d want them to, etc. However, it is clear that the writers and the producers had difficulty finding a nice middle ground on the title character’s fate, and the solution presented to the audience was something that was begrudgingly settled upon. The past 3 seasons have progressively caused me to feel less and less empathy for Dexter. I have become increasingly frustrated at the trail of bodies and destruction left in the wake of the dark passenger’s activities. This final season does a good job at putting some empathy back into the character for us, and I really enjoyed it for that, beyond some major disappointment and characters’ fates. I mean really, what was the point of having them reconcile their relationships, only to have the promise of their futures be taken away? That's already somewhat spoilerific, so I'll be putting the rest of this rant in spoiler tags. Was it really necessary for Deb to die? Her stroke was thrown into the story as a twist with only 20 minutes to go in the episode. Debra Morgan as a character was tortured so gratuitously throughout the series; I can’t imagine why the writers agreed to send her off this way. It didn’t lead to anything profound or significant for the character or Dexter. Also, was it really necessary for Dexter to pull the plug and leave her out at sea? Were we supposed to be moved by the contrast in the imagery of a white bed sheet vs. the traditional black garbage bag used for Dexter’s victims? Were we supposed to appreciate the irony that in spite of his change of character and method of justice, even his loved ones came to the same tragic end? Ugh, but back to Debra’s death, was it a sales pitch suggested by marketing to get a ratings bump? If so, was her death really necessary? The show has already proved numerous times that it is willing to kill off its main characters, people who have been following it to this point already know to expect the unexpected on that front. Beyond that, this is the final season; there is no need to keep anticipation going for future installments. Heck, if there were future installments, that character would have been an asset. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
