I used to hate it but after kinda giving it a whirl I like some of it. This is the rap I listen to:
Lil Wayne[believe it or not] Eminem N.W.A Run DMC Ludacris Sugarhill Gang DMX 2-Pac and I think that's about it. I listened to some other rap too but other than those it's pigshit

I've listened to 2Pac's first 2 albums once through. I need more time with them. Besides the lyrical content, I think his rhythmic flow was lacking in his earliest years. I know he probably grew a lot, considering he has so many albums, but again, I need more time with his stuff.
Eminem is probably in my top 2 favorite rappers. He grew a lot after Infinite, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Slim Shady LP. However, I feel like he peaked with The Eminem Show, and went off into some sort of experimental mode after Encore.
Kanye West is good at what he does, though his latest material feels stale to me. That is, his latest material before the release of his 2010 album (that's coming out in December I think?) I really believe he's going to put himself back on the map in a positive way with his upcoming release.
Ludacris has nice flow, but I haven't listened to him much. Same for DMX.

I like eminem and kanye. Eminem, I think, has the best lyrics. A lot of his songs have a story behind them at least from my impressions.

As much as I love Eminem's mad flow, I have finally become frustrated with his choice of topics. Not all of them, I enjoy when he talks about his relationship to rap and where it's going. However, his "fake" women hating just got to me. I understand where it comes from too, Eminem's story is no secret to his fans. I guess when it comes down to it, my problem lies more in the way his music effects people. There's a lot of controversy over how much entertainers are responsible to the public for their behavior, the messagse that they send, etc. For the most part, I think one of America's biggest problems is its worship of celebrities. In that sense, I defend celebrities right to live however they want to. Simultaneously, I've read a lot of hateful comments on youtube, and other blogs. People making these comments sound like ignorant people who worship the artists they listen to, like Eminem. Eminem even calls them out in his songs. He's known for that, for criticizing over zealous fans. But as Jon Stewart said to Bill O'Reilly over at Fox News, there comes a point where you have to stop and think, What's sticking? What effect am I having on people, in spite of my attempts to be fair and balanced? If the effect is negative, something should be done. We all have a right to decide personally whether or not we want to be good role models. Be that as it may, having the right to do something doesn't mean that one should.

Okay, so my last post on Eminem was kind of a buzz kill. I did find this video on youtube that's pretty funny though. It isn't music, but it's eminem, it's only 2 months old, and it's very funny. Check it out.

The underground famous J-Cole just came out with his debut album Cole World a month or two ago. It's a very good debut. Especially songs 6 and 10 IMHO. The more you listen to it, the more it gets you. It has so much passion in it.
Also, Kanye West and Jay Z did some nice work together on Watch the Throne (that debuted some time during the summer) but it was better in terms of production than it was in terms of rapping. Still, it was a good collaboration album.

I'm always pushing Eminem on this thread, but whatever. It has been a while, and his latest music video to Berzerk is one of the coolest I've seen in a long time. The song is a really cool homage to the Beastie Boys sound too. www.youtube.com/user/eminemvevo?v=ab9176Srb5Y

MMLP2 is out. It's pretty damn good. I talk to a few people who are real rap nerds, and they've pointed out for quite some time that the best stuff, the material that pushes the envelope artistically, is underground. The mainstream nearly always waters the content down in order to be appealing to a larger base. So while I'm aware of this, I still have to say that this is a damn good album. I agree with the critics who are saying it's his best in a decade, and even though that's not saying a whole lot (as much as I enjoyed Recovery), it's a good cd. Kind of like how Kanye West's 2010 release, My Beautiful Dark Fantasy, with Power and All of the Lights was pretty damn good. Except that while Kanye's 2010 release is good more so in its production and overall sound and composition, Em's album is good in all the ways we've been nostalgic for: wordplay that's actually as catchy as it is impressive, and brutal honesty that while familiar, still strikes an emotional chord.
Sorry for the run-on sentence.
I really have to say that his song Headlights made me a little sentimental. The way he apologizes to his mom and takes everything back he said about her in his old songs is pretty moving. Glad to see continued growth, even if his lyrics are still misogynistic and he throws the f*a*g word around a lot.

Recovery to me is the quintessential Eminem album. It's the most relatable rap album I've ever heard, and I feel like it can be inspirational to anyone no matter what they've been through. Recovery was kind of him picking himself back up and proving he's still at the top of the game.

Funny going back and reading those comments. Two months later after saying Kanye had gone stale, he released "My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy" which is arguably the greatest album he has ever done. Then yesterday, he dropped "Ye". I caught myself saying the same thing about him just before his latest album, that he probably not be able to capture that old sound and humility he's known to shock everyone with (considering no one has a bigger ego than Kanye, except maybe our current POTUS). Gotta say though, "Ye" is a damn good sounding album. Thematically, it flows just as well as the sounds do. The music just blends together so well from one song to the next. I'm going to be praying for the man and his family. No matter what kind of crazy offensive stuff he says (and often), his music has touched my life and I want to see him be well.

Rap has become tied with metal as my favorite genre. I've been slowly but surely embracing it since junior high and I've finally got to where I'm 100% comfortable with having a love for it. This is going to be by no means a complete comprehensive list, but these are the rappers I listen to off the top of my head.
2-Pac Biggie Smalls Sugarhill Gang Run DMC Public Enemy N.W.A E-40 Eminem Jurassic 5 Logic Lil Wayne Kendrick Lamar Future Flo Rida Lecrae Tedashii B.O.B KB Post Malone Hopsin Andy Mineo Kevin Gates Kodak Black O.T Genasis
