Where do the Sith names come from? Do they're masters just like make them up on the spot?
like is this how it went down with palpatine? ----------------------------- *okay okay time to come up with a name for this anakin dude. how about darth.... um... sinester ... no no too obvious. um how about i make an anogram of his name. kinana, akinan, .... nikana.... these all suck. okay okay new thoughts new thoughts just make my mind blank ......
......
......
......
i don't have anything! fuck! oh shit he's just been sitting there for like 10 min... come up with something fast! just sound out a word and roll with it!*
"Your Name will be Daaarth Vvvvvvaaaaa..d..aaaar!" ------------------------------------- i mean seriously shouldn't there be some sort of system to it instead of making shit up?
unless i'm wrong here and there is a system.
if not then i came up with an idea for this whole naming your sith lord thing. what if its like the popes? where you take the name of a saint only in this case it'd be past sith lords.

I've actually got no idea. I don't see a specific pattern in the names.
Darth Sidius, Darth Tyrannus, Darth Vader, Darth Nihilus, Darth Plagueis
Well...they do kinda sound latin.

Palpatine is named after some kind of mountain. Sidious is a combination of something. Tyrannus means nothing, Vader and Nihilus mean something in another language, and Plagues is a nonsense word[plague + us]

I'm thinking they're latin or greek derived. The "us" at the end of the word is a big pointer to that. It's a theory.

Some Sith names just use Darth instead of the actual first part of a word that usually means something bad. Example: Invader- Darth Vader Insidious- Darth Sidious

Example: Invader- Darth Vader Insidious- Darth Sidious I didn't know that part Tyrannis means tyrant in latin, so we obvoiusly know where that comes from. Nihil means nothing in latin. So Nihilus...I guess it's derived from that.

those are writer decisions though. like how sinestro is conveniently named sinestro.
i'm talking in the star wars universe is there a reason for these names or do they just make them up. what you all are telling me is that they are just made up.

Maybe they're named for what they represent? Which ties in to what me and BiB suggested

who do you think i was commenting on? your mom? i understand what your saying, but the sith doens't see them selves as the bad guys. no villain does. so why name yourself after these negative words.
all your guys point proves is the writers gave their names meaning that matched their character.
although i dont' see how invader matches anakins personality

"Tyranus. From Tyrant (An absolute ruler who governs without restrictions)" "Plagueis. From Plague(A widespread affliction or calamity, especially one seen as divine retribution)" "Sidious. From Insidious (Working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner)" "Maul. From Maul (A heavy, long-handled hammer)" *Vader. According to the ROTS Novel, 2 syllables put together than meant "him" (in reference to his chosen one status) However, in dutch meaning father as well. hmmmm i see now. even though they sound evil which they do. their meanings don't make them sound evil to themselves. i can see how they would be chosen.
