I think it could be fun to have a predictions thread, where we predict the success/challenges of noteworthy upcoming movies. For example, last year we had 2 live action Snow White adaptations. It might have been fun to predict which of the two would be more successful in terms of characterization or overall quality, based on casting news, directorial vision, screenplay writers, etc. We could have done the same thing with the Channing Tatum white house movie and compared it to the Gerard Butler picture.
So, to get the ball rolling I'm going to focus on 2014 superhero flicks. Thus far, I'm getting the feeling that CA:TWS and TASM 2 are going to be neck and neck when it comes to overall production value. TWS trailer showed that the Russo brothers are being very ambitious in terms of the scope of their film. Based on interviews and descriptions of the SDCC footage, I know we're going to see Cap do things in the film that his action scenes in Avengers didn't even come close to scratching the surface of. Beside that, it's Marvel. Thus far, even their "meh" films are event films.
Meanwhile, TASM 2 has all the right components to come out glistening. Marc Webb has been allowed to go back to technology he's comfortable with, which I think has freed up a lot of time for him to go nuts on decisions pertaining to action, aesthetic design, and music. We have new writers who have been on a hot streak, or who have legitimate reasons for not producing when their projects turned out bad (Transformers 2 was practically a rushed rough draft they gave to Bay just before the writers strike). The two movies will be very different, but it'll be a tough split when time comes to decide on favorites.
Days of Future Past and Guardians are the biggest gamble IMO. Days of Future past has the most at stake, considering the scope of what they're trying to do. Even though Spider-man runs the risk of trying to do too much, it's Days of Future Past that really has the most content to deal with. Mending broken continuities, time travel and historical significance, loads of lead characters... Singer has been behind every well received X-Men film to date (except The Wolverine), hopefully that counts for something. Guardians is just going to be a different film in general. Marvel's approach to risky ventures seems to be to inject humor and A-list celebrities into the work. Fingers crossed on it though.
