This trailer surprised me. David Ayer has some cred, but I really enjoyed the heck out of this. It almost had me more anticipated than the BvS trailer in part because we haven't seen any studio footage from it yet, but also because of our first live action, post Ledger Joker. Leto looks to be killing it so far. Really wishing I had toughed it out last night and slept on Hall H's grassy knoll for the panel. I'm at the con right now, hoping to at least get a poster for Apocalypse around 6 while the panel is going in Hall H.

See now, if they released this photo for the reveal, people might not have been as pissed. Man, Leto looks great, doesn't he?

Not to be a contrarian, but I think it's possible to jump right into the world if you present it to the audience the right way. Other movie characters don't necessarily need an origin, right? You sort of just jump into their life: This is Bob. He and his wife have 4 kids. We discovered this by watching the breakfast scene in which they're having a family meal the way we are left to assume they have always been. etc.
I think we're so conditioned on origin stories that the idea of just jumping right in seems unnatural. Take Watchmen though, controversial as that movie may be, it not being an origin wasn't the issue for people. They gave us the superheroes, we jumped in and out of their lives at different points in time, and that was that. That being said, we can cheat a little without having to devote a ton of time to something being an origin. Take 1989 Batman. How much of that was really an origin? Or 2008's Incredible Hulk. I contend that Marvel Studios had wanted people to start fresh with them and ignore 2003's attempt at the character. They put the origin in the opening credits so that they could move on. History has shown us that that's not what happened, and perhaps the movie didn't perform as highly as it could have because it was associated with Ang Lee's Hulk. The point is, that movie didn't actually need an origin, but it sort of "cheated" one.

Makes sense, but Marvel Studios model is still relatively new. Eight years ago, this world building wasn't really a thing in movies. There's a couple exceptions, but my point is, what if DC is just introducing a new model that takes up? It very may well work, and in the coming years we may be accepting both ways of world building as valid.
Or it could just not work and the Marvel Studios way will continue to be the one model studios use.

Personally, I thought if you'd watch Avengers as it's own thing, it would be easy to follow.
As for Batman and the Suicide Squad, I think DC is trusting the audience to follow along. For one thing, pretty much everyone knows who Batman (and by extension his villains) is thanks to the comics, past movies, cartoons, and the Arkham games. Besides, trailers have shown we will see the Waynes being murdered in front of kid Bruce. It's similar to how Marvel isn't going through another origin story with Spider-Man. As for the Suicide Squad, they have made appearances on Arrow, and considering they're trying to market it more for adults compared to BvS, so they're not expecting a major turn-out but still be successful. We also know that Batman's been active in this universe for a few decades and retired for a brief time, most likely due to Joker killing Jason, and that the villains part of the squad were captured by Batman and later recruited by Waller. The point is, Batman aspects of the DCEU don't necessarily need to go into heavy detail.
And Marvel doesn't necessarily go through all characters origins. Look at Guardians of the Galaxy. It's the first time we're introduced to any of these characters, and while they do delve somewhat into their origins (with admittedly more focus on Quill), I don't believe anyone felt lost.

I thought it would be hard to top their first trailer, which was spectacular. This is my new favorite superhero movie trailer. AOU had an awesome teaser, and Civil War certainly delivered the goods. However, the music, the performances, the footage itself, holy shit. It single handedly made me more enthusiastic for itself than the rest of the super hero movies coming out this year, which was damn near impossible considering we're getting Black Panther and Spider-man for the first time ever in the MCU, and Apocalypse is primed to be the best X-Men movie to date. Kevin Smith said this movie looks to be DC's Guardians of the Galaxy, but honestly, it looks like it could be better. Fingers crossed that it truly delivers, because if it does, it may not matter whether or not Batman v Superman is actually good.

Honestly a lot of stuff about this irks me but, they are killing it with these musical trailers. I feel like there's been a tonal shift in how they're marketing this though, maybe??

Yeah, I kinda see what you mean. It feels like it's taking itself a little less seriously. Not to say that the previous trailer was any less goofy, it's not a tonal shift per se. I just feel a change in focus, if you know what I mean. I dunno if that's a reaction to BvS's critical reception or if it was meant to be that way all along. Or maybe we're both spotting a nuance that isn't actually there.

Oh yeah, the trailers are all pretty much this way tonally, shift in focus is a better way to put it. I think I was going off of memory of the first look which is definitely more different but, that was a while ago. I had heard about the response to criticism thing but, yeah. It's entirely possible I'm just over analyzing marketing purely meant to get you in the seats.

Caution, there be spoilery bits afoot.
Okay, so I said the wonder woman trailer was my favorite. This sort of takes the cake, if you can call this a trailer. So pumped for this movie!
