I have to say, I was very pleased with this movie. I would even venture to say that it was better than the first origin movie. It's a tough call, but I really do think this movie takes the cake.
The strongest point of this movie was clearly the characters. I think most would agree that it was a character driven story. Everything else was essentially secondary. This movie didn't exactly feel theatrical. It very much approximated reality (at least where personalities and relationships are concerned). Peter, for example, very much felt like a run of the mill awkward teenager. He wasn't a stereotypical nerd at all; he just had a problem communicating. I think many would be able to relate to that. Gwen was also a realistic character, as she was never really made out to be Miss Perfect. Just a really pretty and intelligent girl. All of the relationships in this movie were very well presented and fleshed out---even Flash and Peter! I have to say, that I really enjoyed the romance between Gwen and Peter. It wasn't idealized at all. It was awkward, it was precarious, it was experimental. I like that. That's how romance really is. Compare that to the love story in the first Spider-man, which was dangerously close to being a soap opera. I also have to give kudos to the actors in this movie. They all did a phenomenal job. Andrew Garfield was an excellent Peter.
I also loved the new art direction in this movie. The swinging is so fluid. It's like you're actually there with Spider-man. The costume is great. I just love the texture. The tones of the film are also great. It really gives personality to the film.
Now, the main weakness of the movie is in the villain plot. The Lizard bordered on generic, and frankly his plan to create Lizard people is just cringe worthy. (Luckily that never came to fruition so it's something I can forgive). They really missed out on a chance for complexity with this character. They could have explored the possibility of there being a good man inside the monster that is the Lizard, and they could have given Connors a family, making it so that his actions have more personal consequence. Instead, they opted to just have an angry guy who turns into a monster and now wants to turn people into Lizards. This definitely was not a strong suit in the film, but it led to some very entertaining action sequences in the film, AND it also wasn't really a primary plot thread, so in the end, the complaint isn't that major.
TL;DR: I love the characters, the actors, the art, and the action. Lizard is the suxxorz.
