I'd really like to see him back, not as a life model decoy, not in a flashback, but as Agent Coulson, alive and accounted for. The man's alleged death was used as a means of snapping the big guys out of their funk, and making them realize they needed to cooperate with each other. People keep saying that his death needs to mean something, and that bringing him back would cheapen the original impact of his death. In comics, I do agree that death has been trivialized, and that it does not have the same impact that it once had. I think this situation is different though.
Coulson's death served its purpose in mobilizing the Avengers and getting them to work together. If it were revealed that Coulson was alive, is the group going to, all of the sudden stop working together? A better question would be, would anyone regret that they put their differences aside to stop the alien threat? Would they forget how much they accomplished when they were working as a team? Would they think that being lied to was the greater evil, and they would have been better off knowing the truth and mucking everything up by trying to save the world as individual heroes?
I honestly don't think the answer to any of those questions would be "yes".
Banner wouldn't say "Well damn it all to hell, all those lives we saved didn't mean a thing." Stark might say "Wait, you're still here? Well that settles it, we need to talk about some sort of compensation." If he did say that though, you know he'd just be being an ass. Steve wouldn't say "I feel betrayed, a little bit wounded. I'm just not sure it was worth it. I'm really not guys, how do you feel Thor?"

Joss Whedon (MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that haven’t been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). They’ll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). Prepare for an epic adventure that showcases the hope and wonder of the human spirit. This is a world of Super Heroes, aliens and the unusual – of action, spectacle and world spanning stories. The show will speak to the human condition through the lens of our very human, non-powered S.H.I.E.L.D agents – that together we are greater than we are apart, and that we can make a difference in the world. Executive Produced and co-written by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog), Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvel’s first live-action TV series, MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. There's an extended preview online. I much prefer the shorter one. The longer one sort of feels... I dunno. This past year I started catching up on all these cable shows, or being introduced to them. We're talking shows whose quality rivals that of film, and going back to regular television is scary. Not to sound snobbish or privileged (cokeandpopcorn.com, right?) I just want this to be good, on par with what you'd expect from Marvel's in house live action stuff. Here's hoping.

Yeah, wasn't much of a fan to be honest. It's charming in its ways, mostly Coulson, entirely Coulson actually, but the rest just feels so ... network tv. The actors are meh, the jokes are what you'd expect. Action was pretty decent, but this Wade character strikes me as a bit odd. He's a top SHIELD agent and yet he's only killed a "few" people that were all "really bad guys" aren't we past the whole "clean as a baby's bottom" type of hero. If it's an average Joe sure, but this is a guy in league with Black Widow, a spy who got her name for a reason. ABC is really pushes the 2edgey4me line. Don't want to scare away the soccer moms from letting their kids watch.
The show's greatest strength and weakness is the success of the films. It makes everything canon, but... it makes everything canon. Also Marvel is such hot shit right now that every C lister and their mother stands a chance at making it in the big time in film. I don't want the show to be a home for cameos, but at the same time what's the point of being a Marvel branded show without tapping into such a large variety of character profiles? Using the mythos was cool for the conflict, but combining threats is a bit old hat to me.

I get what you're saying. All of the characters feel so expendable. They're so cliche'd and unmemorable. We feel a little differently about the threat though, I think. I believe the Extremis based conflict has promise, especially because Iron Man 3 didn't really flesh it out too well.

Honestly I'm not sure what enemy I'd rather have. I know Hydra would be a top choice but they've never really interested me. Bringing back AIM would be smart I think if Extremis is any tip off. The logic behind the first episodes threat just kind of bugs me I guess. "Lets combine every known super power into one character" it's a broken form of super hero math.
