A retired Pennsylvania pastor whose first wife died under suspicious circumstances more than 11 years ago was charged on Monday with killing his second wife and staging a car accident to cover it up. The accusations have prompted police to re-examine the first wife's death.
Arthur Burton Schirmer, 62, was arraigned Monday in Tannersville on criminal homicide and evidence-tampering charges in the 2008 death of his 56-year-old wife, Betty. He did not enter a plea and was jailed without bail.
Schirmer's attorney said his client denies foul play was involved in either of the deaths. Authorities "seem to have resurrected a prior tragedy to prosecute Mr. Schirmer for a current tragedy," Brandon Reish told reporters.
Betty Schirmer's death was initially ruled an accident, but police said they reopened the investigation after the November 2008 suicide of a man whose wife was having an affair with Arthur Schirmer.
Police concluded Betty Schirmer was already injured before the car crash. Investigators said they later found her blood in the garage of the Reeders United Methodist Church parsonage, in the Poconos, where the couple lived.
Police in Lebanon County said Monday they are now re-examining the 1999 death of Schirmer's first wife, Jewel, who was reported to have died in a fall down a flight of stairs.
According to a police affidavit supporting charges in Betty Schirmer's death, Arthur Schirmer told investigators he was driving her to the hospital at 1:50 a.m. on July 15, 2008, so she could be treated for jaw pain. He told police a deer crossed their path, causing him to lose control of the car.
Arthur Schirmer was unhurt in the crash and there was minimal damage to the car, but his wife suffered multiple skull and facial fractures and died at the hospital, according to court documents. ------------------------------- In Vancouver, a first-year university student was found dead at a Queen's University residence in Kingston on Monday. Queen's officials confirmed the body of the student was discovered, but were not able to say when or whether the student was male or female. The university said the student's name will be released once the family has been notified. ----------------------------- And finally 300 members of the audience on the Oprah show went wild when Winfrey announced a eight-day trip on the first show of her final season, which was aired on US television on Monday.
"We're...going...to...Australia!" Winfrey announced to the shrieking crowd.
As confetti fell and her set was transformed into a mini airport, complete with a plane and a pilot, John Travolta.
The actor is a part-time pilot for the Australian airline Qantas.
Winfrey and Travolta have been planning the trip for a year to mark the end of the chat show queen's hugely popular show.
Winfrey is ending her show after a 25 year run to launch her own TV network in 2011.

George Michael has been jailed for driving while being high.
The 47-year-old singer was sentenced at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court overnight to eight weeks' imprisonment after admitting driving his Range Rover while high on cannabis.
The former Wham! star, who was convicted in 2006 of driving while under the influence of drugs, was found by police "spaced out" at the wheel of his car this summer after he crashed into a Snappy Snaps photographic shop in north London.
In the dock, Michael spoke only to confirm his name and address, adding that he would prefer to be known by his stage name at all times. His apparent confidence ebbed and he sighed deeply when District Judge John Perkins proclaimed that a custodial sentence was inevitable. Michael was told that he would serve half his sentence in jail and the remainder on licence.
Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. Michael will have spent his first night in A Wing, a modernised area reserved for new inmates. He will then be moved to one of six other wings, some specialising in detoxification. The blocks, which hold 1250 male criminals aged over 21 years, have changed little since the prison was opened in 1842.
Michael was arrested in Hampstead shortly before 4am on July 4 when two police officers found him slumped against the steering wheel of his crashed car. Despite having two cannabis cigarettes on him, the musician insisted: "I didn't crash into anything."
He admitted smoking a "small quantity" of cannabis six hours earlier and having taken prescribed antidepressants to help him to sleep. He said that he had been driving between his two homes in Highgate and Hampstead but had forgotten that he had taken sedatives.
The judge criticised the "dangerous and unpredictable mix" of substances, which caused "severe impairment". He told Michael: "It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis. That's a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk."
Mukul Chawla, QC, representing Michael, said that his client was at pains to make clear the "profound shame and horror" he felt having committed a similar offence four years earlier.
The jail sentence is the culmination of a long list of clashes with the law. He was banned from driving for two years in 2006. That year he was cautioned twice for possession of cannabis and two years later for possession of crack cocaine and cannabis. He was also fined for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public lavatory in California in 1998.
Yesterday the judge took into account his early guilty plea. He also recognised that he had "bereavement issues". His mother, Lesley, died from cancer in 1997.
Michael was banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay a 1250-pound fine.

Actor and comedian Russell Brand has been arrested in Los Angeles after allegedly attacking a photographer.
The 35-year-old was taken into custody on Friday at Los Angeles International Airport after being accused of pushing a photographer.
Police said he was arrested for a misdemeanour charge of simple battery and was later released from custody after posting $20,000 bail.
A video of the altercation posted on the internet by TMZ showed Brand and his fiancée, the singer Katy Perry, being surrounded by paparazzi as they entered the airport terminal.
Brand has not made any comment about the incident. -------------------------------- Six men have been arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London, suspected of preparing an attack against Pope Benedict who is on a state visit to Britain.
The 6 men, between the ages of 26 and 50, have been taken to a central London police station as officers were searching a business in central London and homes in the north and east of the city. None of the men have been charged.
It is not clear whether the investigations relate to a plot against the pope himself or an element of the visit. --------------------------------- A Fond du Lac man is suing the woman who allegedly sought revenge for this cheating ways by tying him up and gluing his penis to his stomach.
The Post-Crescent of Appleton reports on Wednesday that the 38-year-old man filed the lawsuit against 49-year-old Therese A. Ziemann of Menasha in late July.
Last week, her attorney filed a motion seeking to dismiss the case.
Calumet County prosecutors say Ziemann lured the man to a motel on July 30, 2009. After tying him to the bed under the pretense of sex, Ziemann called three other women to the room.
They berated the man before Ziemann struck him and glued his penis to his body. All four women were eventually placed on probation.
Davis is asking for monetary damages for medical expenses and as punishment for Ziemann's actions.

DESTROY ALL HUMANS! ----------------------------- The Six binmen accused of plotting to assassinate the Pope were Joking. The men were arrested after they “joked” in the staff canteen about blowing him up with a rocket-propelled grenade.
The binmen – all of North African origin – were drinking tea on Thursday when they started to talk about how easy it would be to assassinate the pontiff.
One of the men said: “It would be pretty difficult to shoot the Pope, wouldn’t it, as his car is bulletproof?”
One of his pals then said: “Yeah, but I bet an RPG (rocket propelled grenade) would get through that easily enough.”
The group laughed, before changing the subject.
But a colleague at cleaning firm Veolia Environmental Services was concerned enough about the sinister comment to call the police.
The employee told detectives that the men had access to the Pope’s route, as they were cleaning the streets hours before he was due to parade through London.
The information was immediately passed on to Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Unit.
Armed officers swooped on the depot, in Marylebone, Central London, in a dawn raid on Friday.
The men had just turned up for work and officers began screaming for the suspects to put their hands on their heads. A sixth person was arrested later in North London.
A police source said: “When we received the information it was decided that we needed to get the men in and see if there was a real terrorist plot. It wasn’t something that we could have taken a chance with, given that the Pope was in the country that day and the men had access to the Pope’s route.
“If somebody on a plane jokes that they have a bomb the authorities take it extremely seriously and this was a similar situation. ------------------------------ Actor and comedian Russell Brand has been arrested in Los Angeles after a scuffle with a photographer who he says tried to take intrusive pictures of his fiancee, singer Katy Perry.
The 35-year old told police that he tangled with paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport because one was attempting to take shots up Perry's skirt.
Perry later backed up his account when she tweeted: "If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me."
Prosecutors will know that any jury would be extremely sympathetic to a celebrity reacting to a photographer's attempt to taking pictures up the skirt of his girlfriend, prompting speculation that the case will be dropped. -------------------------------- DESTORY ALL SICS AND WEBBERS!

i've never had a problem with it. the general concern with gays in the military is that for a company to be a cohesive team they need to trust each other. and well you can't just say to everyone not to feel uncomfortable with someone in your squad being gay. its just well how most dudes feel about it. and if there is that distrust it could get a guy killed.
thats why its don't ask don't tell. we don't want to know sort of thing and everything will work out fine.
its a similar reason why woman can't be in the front lines. because a man is more willing to disobey protocol to save a girl then a fellow man.
yeah its harsh for them to get kicked out if they open up. but think about it. is it that hard to just keep it to yourself?
i can only speak for myself. if i was in the military and i knew a few guys were gay in the squad well it'd be uncomfortable for a bit but after a while i'd get over it. but in that time of discomfort what if there is an important mission and because of that distrust in the squad something goes wrong.
not to mention if it is repealed you'll have have to get into "okay soldiers let this be clear that there should be no relationships between you guys"

Its not about the gays coming out. Its about the military going through these peoples stuff to see if they're gay. They call people that may know. Thats how its unconstitutional. It wouldn't be as big of a problem if their were people looking around to see if someone is gay or heterosexual soldiers telling their commanders that another soldier is gay

Exactly. It's don't ask don't tell, which should apply for everyone in the military, not just gays. No need to call people, search through stuff and then tell a commanding officer you're suspicious or whatever fuckery they are commencing.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are now in disarray. There are various concerns about the games stemming from terror threats delays, labour violations, corruption in securing infrastructure and "unlivable conditions" at the games village.
Yesterday a bridge collapsed and now reports are flooding in that part of a roof has collapsed in the weightlifting/wrestling arena.
But now Athletes are starting to pull out out of fears of a terror attack.
Australian discus champion Dani Samuels last night became the first athlete to pull out over security fears. She said that no gold medal was "worth risking her life".
Three other English high profile athletes - Phillips Idowu, Christine Ohuruogu and Lisa Dobriskey have also withdrew citing security and injury concerns.
British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported that Idowu's agent Ricky Simms had earlier insisted that no official decision had been made, but the 31-year-old Idowu used his Twitter account to say: 'Sorry people, but I have children to think about. My safety is more important to them than a medal.'
And there are reports that more Australian athletes are planing to pull out as well.
Major teams are also threating to pull out because of the condition of the games village.
These withdrawls are sparking fears that the Games may be cancelled.
