Daredevil comes out tomorrow. Anyone else a little worried that this season won't be as strong as season 1? In the first season, they really focused on weaving a strong character driven narrative. They raised the bar for the type of fight choreography you could see in a superhero production. They rocked their low budget and wore it like a champ. I just haven't been the biggest fan of the marketing for S2. A clip was recently released showing the vigilantes of season 2 battling The Hand. It's an out of context clip that looks like it was specially shot for the promo, but the fighting in it matches the fighting in another clip released earlier this week. In that one, Daredevil and Elektra battle the yakuza in what was for me, the worse choreographed action the series had offered up so far. It looked more Agents of SHIELD than Daredevil. And while I'm more concerned with the character work being good than the action being amazing, it was this show that got me so amped up because of its action last April. I just hope that it lives up, because so far, my excitement for Jon Bernthal's Punisher has waned since the first trailer in their 2 part special, and while I've heard that Elodie Young steals the show, her action scenes have been lackluster for me. Okay, done with the negativity for now. Can't wait for midnight.

I was wrong about the action. Wow, they at least matched the first season. Punisher is certainly much more violent than anything season 1. I don't think a more violent character has ever "graced" the screen, but that's the whole point of the character I suppose. Jon Bernthal was the best part of this season for me, but Foggy Nelson was pretty damn awesome too. On episode 12 now, can't wait to see how it ends. All in all, I do think season 1 was better, but there was more than enough good in here to keep me tuning into future seasons. Oh, and also... Vincent D'Onofrio is back as Wilson Fisk. I have to say, he was much better as an understated version of the character last season. Now that D'Onofrio is in full on ham mode, it's too over the top for me. Even still, the way the character was used in episode 9 was awesome. Frank Castle in the prison though. Soon as the guard locked the gate, I knew I was about to see what I had been waiting months for. Totally worth it.

Okay, so I finished the series. Some of what I'm about to say I at least alluded to in the post above, but I thought I'd elaborate. There will be ambiguous spoilers strewn throughout, so I won't put all of them in spoiler tags. However, if you don't want anything to be even mildly spoiled I would suggest not reading further until later. Okay, so I gotta be honest here. I'm a little disappointed in this season. It wasn't so much the characterization that I disliked as it was the construction of the story. You have all this stuff with the Punsiher, then Elektra and the Hand (which didn't go together as well as I'd hoped), Matt, Foggy and Karen, setting up future Netflix conflicts, etc. To me, it felt as though the writers had this big list of things they had to hit, and they just sort of jigsawed it all together. Let's look at the Matt, Foggy and Karen drama. To me, it was an unnecessary retread of season 1, only this time it was taken further. Matt's a bigger jerk than ever by letting his friends down while Daredevil protects them, Foggy whinier than ever (while also being cooler in and out of the court room). I really liked him in the middle of the season, but was totally disappointed with him by seasons end. Though I wish Karen was in on his secret identity and her knowing would completely change the way season 2 plays out, I think the way she reacts to Matt Murdock's failures is justified. Foggy on the other hand knows exactly why Matt is doing what he's doing, he gets an opportunity to vent and does so, and then he just holds onto the anger. The developments between Matt and Karen were nice. Matt should have told Karen he was Daredevil earlier on, which would have lead on to a more nuanced conflict of interest and a more interesting group dynamic though. There's the argument that Matt holds his secret back from Karen because he wants to protect her, but Karen is constantly throwing herself in the middle of the action. She's fully committed to fighting the same battle as a civilian that Matt is fighting. The only reason Matt completely ignores this is because of some trope that romantic interests aren't allowed to know. It's old territory, been there done that. Karen not knowing worked really well in season 1, but by season 2 they're the best of friends. Matt's dual identity has caused problems that deserve explanations, and with Karen already being in danger, by choice, so often, what the hell is keeping him from holding it back from her? At least he told her in the show's final moments. Just wish it had happened sooner so we could've developed their relationship further, that's all I'm saying. Elektra's as a character was okay. I read an article recently that talked about why Marvel was right to reimagine her, but wrong in how they reimagined her. Basically, the criticism is that she really didn't have her own agency for the majority of the season. Everything she did until the final episodes was because she was fighting Stick's war. I understand the sentiment. However, my real disappointment with her is that she just didn't grab my attention. Jon Bernthal was a force in this season. Even though his story was jigsawed in just as much as the Hand stuff, his character at least held my focus. I couldn't wait to see more of him on screen and I wanted to learn more about him. Elektra's story just didn't do that for me. I don't think it was the actress's fault. There's just something about the way all these stories were put together in this season that didn't mesh well. When season 2 was in pre-production, one of the show's creators left to work on another project. It might have been Drew Goddard, I'm not sure. Perhaps the disjointedness of this season is due to his departure? Whatever the case, I hope Marvel Netflix can remain the place to go for premiere content in the drama department.

I liked this season, but not as much as season one. It still delivered on everything that made season one great from character development to action, while bringing about a theme of escalation in a number of ways. It makes me look forward to season three though, which I'm betting will be based on the "Born Again" storyline.
